This is the actual title of an email sent to Greg early last summer, providing details of how to navigate from UB to a friend's Ger camp about two hours outside of the city. I think the body of the email explains quite succinctly what traveling outside of the city entails...
Once in Terelj look for Batkhan sign. Turn off is 0.6 km after that at Buuveit and Chingis Khan Country club/golf course. Follow the dirt road/track immediately after club on right. And stay to your right. Then up steep hill and over pass. Once down other side veer to left and then follow dirt road for about half hour. When you pass large ovoo and head down narrow pass you're almost there. Look for track heading to right toward a few gers and that's us.
It was an absolutely magnificent day for a drive through the countryside, but we would not have made it without the 4-wheel drive and were precariously perched on the side of a ravine at more than one point. By the time we began following the directions, we had already been outside of the city a good 45 minutes but it was well worth the drive- the Mongolian countryside is truly some of the most beautiful land I've ever traveled through. I am grateful for every chance we have to get out of the city to breathe the fresh air.
